Felt Gingerbread Cookies

Several weeks back, I was searching online for Christmas decor when I came across the cutest wooden toy Christmas cookies, perfect for my little ones to spend hours serving up and playing with. Although they were darling, I just couldn’t justify spending $25 on them, so I set out to make my own. I came up with these sweet little “gingerbread” felt cookies and couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.

Not only are they perfect for pretend play, they make adorable kid friendly ornaments as well as gift toppers. I had fun decorating these and love that they are so budget friendly. You’ll only need 5 things to make these. I already had leftover puff paint on hand from my salt dough gingerbread cookie ornaments, so all I had to purchase were the two felt sheets, bringing the total cost under a dollar. Yes, these were under a dollar to make! The felt sheets I used were 0.79 at Hobby Lobby and on a promotion for half off. Don’t forget that Hobby Lobby always has a 40% off one item coupon on their website. I used one when I bought my puff paint a while back. Never pay full price!

Supplies:

-Sharp scissors

-Christmas cookie cutters of your choice

-Pen

-White puff paint

-Two sheets brown, camel or tan felt (think gingerbread or sugar cookie cut-out colors). I chose the thicker sheets of felt to mimic the thickness of a real cookie.

1. Start by choosing your Christmas cookie cutters. Starting at the corner of a piece of felt, use your pen to trace around your cookie cutter shape. Continue tracing your shapes onto your felt pieces leaving a little room between each for cutting.

2. Cut your “cookies” out using a sharp pair of scissors, cutting off the portion with pen marks. Discard scraps.

3. Use your white puff paint to make an outline around each felt shape. Add “icing” details to make them look like iced gingerbread cookies.

4. Allow paint to dry for a few hours or until fully dried

*If using these as ornaments or gift toppers, cut small slits at top of each “cookie” and add a small loop of ribbon for tying.

I used a cute wooden crate from our toy food collection as well as a wooden cutting board to style these. I arranged them on my boys market cart for them to discover. If you’re looking for a great Christmas gift for a tiny chef, look no further. My boys love this cute wooden piece and use it for serving up ice cream, lemonade, hot dogs and whatever seasonal food we have. Such a cute and classic toy.

I love being able to surprise my boys throughout the season with fun and festive things that encourage creativity and play. They’ve already played with these little cookies a ton and they’re holding up great. They’re even cute enough to serve to Santa on Christmas Eve.
